What is Magic: The Gathering?
Magic: The Gathering (MTG) is a strategic collectible card game created by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast in 1993. It has since become one of the most popular and enduring trading card games in the world, with millions of players worldwide and a rich, expanding game universe. Players take on the role of powerful spellcasters known as “Planeswalkers,” battling against one another using decks of cards that represent magical spells, creatures, artifacts, and lands.
Card Types and Colors
Magic: The Gathering cards are divided into several categories, including:
- Creatures: Units that can attack or defend.
- Sorceries and Instants: One-time spells with immediate effects.
- Enchantments and Artifacts: Permanent cards that provide ongoing benefits or detriments.
- Lands: Cards that generate mana, the resource used to cast spells.
MTG also revolves around five colors of mana, each representing different themes and strategies:
- White: Order, protection, and healing.
- Blue: Knowledge, manipulation, and control.
- Black: Ambition, sacrifice, and death.
- Red: Chaos, destruction, and direct damage.
- Green: Growth, life, and large creatures.
How Magic: The Gathering is Played
In Magic: The Gathering, each player typically starts with a deck of 60 or more cards (depending on the format) and aims to reduce their opponent’s life total from 20 to zero. Players achieve this by casting spells, summoning creatures to attack their opponents, and using various strategic tactics to outplay their opponent. The game is turn-based, and each turn consists of several phases where players can play lands (resources for casting spells), cast spells, attack, and defend.
