Rook: The Classic Card Game

Rook is a unique twist on traditional card games, offering a fresh challenge with its distinct deck and strategic gameplay. Unlike a standard deck of cards, the Rook deck features only numbers 1 through 14, divided into four colors instead of the usual suits like spades or hearts. In the standard 4-player game, cards numbered 1-4 are removed, creating a 41-card deck, including the powerful Rook card.

The game revolves around strategic bidding and teamwork. Players bid for the right to declare the trump color, and the team that wins the bid must earn enough points to meet their bid. Tricks are played in a similar style to games like Bridge, where players must follow the color of the lead card, with the highest card taking the trick—unless a trump card is played. The Rook card, a special feature of the deck, can be played at any time and always wins the trick.

Scoring is where Rook sets itself apart from other trick-taking games. The focus isn’t on the number of tricks won, but rather on collecting specific point cards (5’s, 10’s, 14’s, and the Rook card) during gameplay. Variants for 2 or 3 players, along with popular house rules, make Rook adaptable to different group sizes and playstyles.
